Āsanas have evolved over thousands of years as a methodical approach to accessing the body and are classified systematically into different categories.
- Standing Āsanas
- Seated Āsanas
- Forward extensions
- Lateral extensions
- Inversions
- Abdominals
- Backward extensions
- Sun salutations (Sūrya Namaskār)
- Restorative (supine)
A proper combination and sequencing of these āsanas plays an important role in achieving maximum benefits from the practice of āsanas. Some schools of yoga, such as the Ashtānga tradition, have scripted sequences arranged into Vinyāsa, or practice series. Others, such as the Iyengar system, emphasize precise alignment and holding a pose for longer durations. At Aanand Saagar, we practice āsanas as taught in different traditions.
